READING LIST OF COMICS THAT I THINK ARE GREAT

WEB-COMICS
-------------------------------------------------------

-Ever After,
beautiful work by Endling and if you've been watching him for a while then you should know about his character "Red" by now. Imagine a world in which fairy tales wanted to stay happily ever after. A few fairy tales decide that the only way to do this is to hunt everyone else down and lock them up in an asylum. And what's even worse is the big bad wolf is gathering everyone up. Until he meets little red ride riding hood again... The he gets his ass kicked. (Um... for the most part) Check it out it's by Shawn Healey on SNAFU.com

-Lackadaisy,
Anthro at it's best. It's been in the work for a while but I'm just getting into it. Basic story is that it's cat anthro in the 20's. But the writing and character development is just spectacular. And of course, the variety of emotions in animals that humans can't express is why anthro can achieve what other styles can not. Created by Tracy Butler (DA: [link]) Lackadaisy.com

ARTIST, AND WRITER
------------------------------------------------------

-Bone,
three cartoons find themselves in a world of war and myth. Filled with brilliant humor, a tale of a struggle for innocence, And filled with characters and creatures worthy of the greatest legends. created entirely by the independent comic creator: Jeff Smith. This whole series comes in an enormous $40 book with over a thousand of pages.

-Flight,
some of the finest examples of comic shorts compiled of various professionals (four books, chief of art Kazu Kibushi)

CLASSICS
------------------------------------------------------

-"Understanding comics" & "making comics", Scott Mccloud.

-"Watchmen" & "V for vendetta", Michael Moore.

-The Sandman series,
the tales of Dream, Death, Desire, Delirium, Destruction, Despair, and Destiny. each personified in a physical form. Neil Gaiman.
highly intelligent and insightful.

-Persepolis,
a biography of an Iranian childhood, Marjane Satrapi 1 and 2

BRIAN K. VAUGHAN
------------------------------------------------------

-"Y the last man"
I SUGGEST THIS SERIES ABOVE ALL. A series in which a unexplainable global holocaust kills almost every mammal with a Y chromosome (males) on earth but single English major, Yorrick Brown. No it's not a pornO!! Its a dramatic 10 issue series that has writing that could easily be considered by many professionals as a comic book masterpiece.
by Brian K. Vaughan, Guerra, Parlov, and Marzan Jr.

-"Ex-Machina"
means,"King of Machines". A comic obsessed garbage man makes the mistake of a life-time when half of his face is blown off by a mysterious energy giving him the Uncanny ability to speak and control machines, becoming the world's first "super-hero". Years later He's the Mayor of New-York. What could cause this perplexing shift in career's? 9/11. Written by The same award winner of "Y", Brian K. Vaughan. Art (really interesting, check him out) by Tony Harris

-"Pride of Baghdad" Four lions in an Iraqi zoo find their freedom when America invades Iraq for a second time. A real masterpiece with loads of symbolism. Written by once again, Brian K. Vaughan. Art by Niko Henrichon.

HARD TO FIND
-------------------------------------------------------

-"Kingdom of The Wicked".
Ok, this book made me tear, that should be enough to pick it up. Children's book writer Christopher Grahame rivals Lemony Snicket and J.K. Rowling and may even soon exceed them. yet all this success is stemming from his actual experience in a world entirely of his creation when he was a small boy, Castrovala. With friends like Fuzzbox the teddy bear, bob-dog, and Captain Flashheart. a place of tap-dancing philosophers, Clock-work cow chimp racing, and harvesting babies from family trees. Though he's suddenly brought back to Castrovala at the peak of his career, except it's a war-zone, with his friends playing the part of cannon-fodder. Even more disturbing is that the monsters that they've been fighting against are led a man that looks exactly like Chris. this book has one of the most disturbing concepts for a villain I've ever read. a very sad book. Story by Ian Edington and art by D'israeli.

-"Ordinary victories".
An amazing story of the complications to the life of a photographer in France (by a French creator). Life changing, inspirational, a true story of rolling with the punches that life gives you. Manu Larcenet.

-"M",
This book is absolutely gorgeous. The adapted screen-play of a silent film by Fritz Lang in the 20's. A tale of murder noir at it's finest, the breath-taking black & white, photo-realistic images could tell the entire story without all of the dialogue (Though the writing is very complex), brought to us by Jon J. Muth

-"Notes For A War Story",
a tale of gangster hood, militiamen, and the three pitiful kids that just happen to get thrown into the whole mess. written by one of the best comic creators of Italy, Gipi.

MANGA
------------------------------------------------------

"Lone Wolf & Cub"
as well as "Samurai Executioner": WARNING MATURE CONTENT AT AN ALL-TIME HIGH! Both of these series I consider to be very professional Samurai Manga. Lone wolf and cub is the tale of A single father and his son (I don't know maybe he's 4 or 8, these guys are pretty decent at drawing adult men and women, but the end result of any child is kinda creepy... ANYWAYS-) they hire themselves both as hired mercenaries. the cool part is that the man has all these cool blades hidden within the child's carriage. Samurai executioner: meh, pretty self-explanatory a Ronin who's hired to execute convicts for the government. both of these books are created by the writer Kazuo Koike and the artist Goseki Kojima. Despite the extreme ammount of mature content in these books, there are two problems I have with these series: they both very episodal as well as they both share great disrespect for women. It's up to you if you want to check em out but I warn you. Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima.

-"Blade of The Immortal":
Swastika's do not necessarily mean Nazi, They were originally called "Manji", and were a symbol for Buddhist priests before the 20th century. Wow! check out the anime to this as well, it's quite new. Beautifully illustrated, I'm really not sure if the art's a mix between pencils and ink, but I'm told it's suppose to be entirely inked (if that's the case then this guy IS AMAZING). Hiroaki Samura brought a supernatural quality (as well as a pop-culture quality, BEFORE samurai champloo). Manji, the main ronin protagonist, has been infected with blood worms for many years, blood worms are these little maggots that can heal your wounds and regrow body parts, but the owner is cursed with immortality. he's killed 100 innocents, and now he's turned good, so he wants to kill 1000 bad guys now... Overall, very entertaining. Created by Hiroaki Samura

-"Akira"
a new favorite of mine. The first thing you'll notice about this one is the abosolutELY JAW-DROPPING INTENSE SCENES OF ACTION! The use of speed lines, and crazily exaggerated expressions and body language are some of the most iconic themes of the japanese medium of manga, and it's not hard to admit; Akira truly set's the standards for what it is to be good manga. AS FOR STORY...
"the outsiders" + "the sixth sense" + "Dragon-Ball Z" = AKIRA
Imagine motor bikes, drug abuse, world war III, telekinetics, and evil paranormal feds

Long Needed Summer update.

Thu Jun 18, 2009, 1:04 PM
:iconstrongbadplz: <IT'S OVER!!!

I've graduated high school! Uh... 2 weeks ago! YEAH! Congrats to 09!

So, I've figured that I should probably update my status a little more now that it's summer and all and i don't have anything that may keep me busy, I- oh wait... that's right. I'm unemployed. going to be attending MCAD in late august, and have a boat-load of Grad parties and family gatherings to attend to. :P

So I'm not exactly sure of what to do at the moment so I thought I should make a journal to thank everybody who continues to watch me. You guys are Super! seriously thanks for giving me your scrutiny and such along with reaching 8000 pageviews. I KNOW I KNOW, it's not that big of a deal, but I'm just starting out and just think it's really cool that i have some active watchers.

So MCAD is in august, something I've been waiting for since 8th grade. I plan on honing my craft to become a storyboard/comic artist, though it's not like the degree is going to be helping me in anyway afterwards. At the end of the day, it's experience and skill that matters, not a degree. At least in that line of work. ANY ONE ELSE GOING TO MCAD: WE SHOULD TOTALLY HANG OUT BEFORE THE END OF SUMMER. Totally. it'll be, like, awesome.

I haven't had much time to work on new comics, but would like to work on some more shorts of my own rather than OCT's. Nonetheless, I may be making a few new OC's for a few organizations like the SDL and OCBZ and such. All I know is that I'm swamped at the moment.

Assuming that many of you don't know, but I make movies! I've taken two years of advanced digital production and soon I will be submitting some of my works. Check out my youtube account:

dedsword.

There will soon be some links on my page to my movies. Not to mention I will also be updating the comics reading list.
